I had read of this scandal before; a university president expelled a student without due process because the student peacefully and lawfully dissented from the president's plans for a parking garage on campus. Now the former university president has been found personally liable, I am happy to see.
Not every foolish or nasty decision by a bully in a position of authority is or should be a tort, but it's nice to see someone held answerable for going too far. One consideration is that this was a state university; if a purely private institution wants to expel uppity students, and does not violate any contract by doing so, let the private institution suffer the damage to its reputation for nasty behavior. By the way, the former student is also suing the university for breach of contract; that claim remains pending.
